The Humber Brazilian Jazz Ensemble performed its concert ‘Road to Rio’  Jan. 14 in the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheater at the Canada Opera Company as part of the 2013/2014 Free Concert series.

Humber College music students make up the 11- member ensemble, which is directed by legendary pianist and ethno culturist Gord Sheard.

Henrique Matulis, 52, the only Brazilian-born member of the ensemble, brought his family from Sao Paulo to Canada four years ago. He plays the electric guitar.

“I started playing when I was 12 years old… First in the conservatory, but I was always an autodidact. I played Bossa Nova and Samba for many years,”  Matulis tells Skedline.com reporter Rudy Moscoso.

Moscoso spoke with Sheard and drummer/percussionist Tyler Goertzen earlier this week about what Brazilian music means to them.
