The nomination period for elections to the student government,  Humber Students’ Federation (HSF), has begun and prospective candidates are already picking up their nomination packages.

HSF President Timothy Brilhante says  it is great that students are interested in being part of their college government.

“I think engaging in student leadership is very admirable. It takes a lot of courage to put yourself out there so for anyone who is really wanting to be engage in student government – they’ve done the hardest thing. Just putting their hats in the race,” he says.

University of Guelph business administration student Inderjeet Kaur Sangha, 22, has picked up her nomination package and says she is in the process of securing signatures from Humber students. Sangha is applying for the VP of Student Affairs for the North and Guelph Humber campuses.

“I’m just approaching lots of students I don’t usually talk to. Sometimes I feel very energized, like yes I can do this. Then sometimes I feel like it’s an overwhelming process,”  Sangha says. “I’ve been at Humber for five years now. I feel like I know more of the underlying issues affecting students having experienced both Humber College and Guelph Humber I feel like I have lot more to offer.”

Meanwhile, mechanical engineering student, Tim Samaniego, 20, says his motivation for running is to  become more active in student life and help improve campus services. Samaniego is applying for the VP of Student Life for the North and Guelph Humber campuses.

“I want to be part of it because I want to be more involved. I want to contribute more. I want to be part of helping HSF be better. I’m learning more and more about HSF and I want to get involved to contribute to their growth. I want to also contribute to the growth of students,” Samaniego says.

Prospective candidates will attain a certain number of signatures based on the position they are applying to and submit their completed nominations package by Feb. 7 when the nomination period ends.

Successful candidates will begin campaigning between Feb. 24 and March 7. Voting will take place between March 10 and March 14. The winning candidates will be announced on the evening of March 14.

These are the HSF positions:

President: One representing all campuses.

Vice President Student Affairs: One representing North & Guelph Humber campus, and one representing the Lakeshore campus.

Vice President Student Life: One representing North & Guelph Humber campus, one representing Lakeshore campus.

Director : Four representing North campus, three representing Lakeshore campus, two for Guelph-Humber and one for Orangeville campus.

Students interested in becoming candidates elections must be full-time Guelph-Humber or Humber students and maintain a 70 per cent average.

 

After successfully attaining the appropriate number of signatures for your position and submitting your nominations package back to HSF by Friday Feb. 7, HSF will contact those who will have successfully moved forward in the elections process.  Those students will then be required to attend All-Candidates meetings to gain further knowledge about the campaigning process.  Campaigning will then begin Monday Feb. 24 and end on Friday March 7.  During this time, candidates will be able to establish a campaign team of either Guelph-Humber and Humber students to ask for votes from students, creates posters, and hold small events to promote their platform.  After campaigning, students voting will take place between March 10 and March 14, at which point candidates will be notified those elected into each position at the final all candidates meeting on the 14th.
