The latest H5N1 and H1N1 reports have put prevention on the public eye once again with the Toronto Public Library offering a free seminar about the immune system and prevention against a wide range of sicknesses and affections.

Jerry Zhou and Eric Gracey, PhD students from the Immunology department of the University of Toronto, will present The Hygiene Hypothesis and Your Immune System, an educational seminar with a strong emphasis on hygiene and how it helps to prevent bacteria, viruses, and other organisms.

Zhou, Gracey, and Elisa Porfilio -another PhD student from the Immunology department- are part of SciChat, an initiative ran by graduate students from the University of Toronto.

Gracey said that they do not give medical advice, but rather present information and foundings.

This subject has been explored in a Harvard’s Health Publications’ article titled How to Boost Your Immune System. It provided further evidence on how age, exercise, and diet play a role in the immune system.

The seminar will take place at the North York Central Library, room 1, on Thursday, January 30, at 7 p.m.
