The Canadian National Railway Company and Unifor came to deal late last night to avoid the lockout of 4,800 employees.

Unifor said ratification meetings will take place in the next few weeks and details of the agreement will only be revealed thereafter.

Talks went on well past the 11 p.m. deadline, but thanks to help from federal mediation authorities, an agreement was reached nonetheless.

The threat to strike was announced by the union after months of negotiations had failed and CN insisted workers agree to binding arbitration or face a lockout.
