Humber College Lakeshore’s Event Management postgraduate students are getting ready to give back to the community.

There will be an exclusive screening of the classic hit The Wizard of Oz at the Regent Theatre on March 15. Half of the funds raised will go towards Humber’s College Scholarship Fund and the other half to the Hospital for Sick Children. Proceeds will go to enhancing Marnie’s Lounge, a recreational room on the hospital’s fourth floor.

Samantha Dennis is a student in the event management postgraduate program. As a child, Dennis was diagnosed with cancer and was treated at SickKids. Now at 24, Dennis looks forward to giving back to the hospital that helped save her life.

“SickKids, is an amazing hospital! I have an extended family there that will always be in my heart. It’s very important to me to give back to SickKids because I know what it is like for an institution such as this to change your life,” says Dennis.

The event will feature a food reception before the screening and a dessert reception after the movie. Everything from the food to the décor will reflect the Wizard of Oz theme.

Farra Kurniawan is a part of the event management program and has played a lead role in organizing the event.

“SickKids is where more than 100,000 patients a year consider home; and as Dorothy famously discovers, ‘There’s no place like home’,” says Kurniawan.

As well as helping out the hospital, those in the events management program will also be gaining experience in the field.

“Being a part of this project helps me experience the many different aspects of event management– from concept development, finance, sponsorship, marketing, and eventually to execution,” says Kurniawan

Advance tickets are already being sold for the screening online at http://www.clickyourheels.wix.com/event for $30. Children 12 and under are half price and under 3 are free. For those purchasing tickets at the door, the price will be $35 for adults and $17 for children 12 and under. Humber Lakeshore paralegal student Diana Stepanova says she is looking forward to seeing the special screening.

“The Wizard of Oz is one of my favourite movies and the money also goes to a good cause. I like the idea of also giving money towards the [Humber] scholarship fund, a lot of students will benefit,” says Stepanova.

The event will run from 6:30 p.m. – 10 p.m. inside the Regent Theatre on March 15.
