BASE Team Lead Robyn Mattrasingh (far right) says: “It’s about bringing more awareness to sexual violence. I think a lot of the time there’s a lot of shame – You don’t have to have experienced sexual violence to want to participate, and if you have experienced sexual violence you don’t have to come out and say so if you’re not comfortable. It really just levels the playing field, bringing everyone together in support.” At The BASE, Humber College’s Lakeshore Campus in Toronto, Ont. Thursday, Sept. 26. (Photo by Madi Cyr/Skedline.com)
Student Diversity and Inclusion Initiative Coordinator Yamikani Msosa kicks off the evening, inviting community leaders and artists to share their stories of strength and survival before the march begins. “I remember attending my first Take Back the Night march over 13 years ago, and I can’t tell you how empowering it was as a survivor to be among other like-minded people who cared and who believed my story.” Msosa says that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men experience sexual violence in their lifetime, and transgender and non-binary people are five times as likely. Musician “Saffron A.” performs Priceless Advice (Listen on Spotify). The song breaks down the advice young woman get to help avoid sexual violence. No matter where these suggestions come from – be it parents or police – they all have the same flaw: they place the blame for sexual violence on the victim’s shoulders. Saffron wants to change that. Consent Peer Educator Cody Bennett opens up about his experience with sexual violence. “There is no template for what a survivor should be, should do, should look like. All of our experiences are different, we carry ourselves in our own way, and some of the best ways we can best support survivors are by listening, believing, and uniting our voices.” At Humber College’s North Campus in Etobicoke, Ont., Thursday, Sept. 26.
