One of the two founders of Cirque du Soleil, Guy Laliberté, was arrested on charges of drug trafficking while trying to enter French Polynesia.

Laliberté was detained for growing cannabis on his private island. It is illegal to grow, traffic, or consume cannabis in French Polynesia. It is unclear currently whether or not Laliberté has been formally charged yet.

The arrest comes after a source close to Laliberté was arrested, and pictures of Laliberté’s plantation were found on the source’s phone.

Lune Rouge – Laliberté’s company – has issued a statement saying that Laliberté uses marijuana for medical reasons, and the cannabis he grows on his island is for his own personal use only. Laliberté has also said that he does not traffic the cannabis he grows.

He is expected to appear in court on Wednesday.
