Ryan Newman walked out of the hospital Wednesday afternoon after suffering serious injuries Monday night in the final lap of the Daytona 500.

His team, Roush Fenway Racing, tweeted earlier Wednesday that Newman was showing “great improvement” and then announced his release from Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Fla., posting a picture of him walking toward the parking lot holding hands with his two daughters.

Newman was leading the race when he was bumped from behind by Ryan Blaney, his car turning and slamming into the wall. The car caught fire and eventually skidded across the finish line upside down.

Denny Hamlin ended up winning the race for the third time in his career.
