Australia and Qatar, the two non-South American sides invited to take part in this year’s Copa America have pulled out of the tournament.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions and the upcoming 2022 World Cup and 2023 AFC Asian Cup, both teams had conflicting schedules and matches.

“The Socceroos’ players and staff were greatly looking forward to the unique opportunity of playing in the Copa America and it is unfortunate that, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we will be unable to attend in 2021,” says Australia’s Head Coach, Graham Arnold.

The tournament is looking to invite two other nations but regardless will continue with either 10 or 12 sides. The tournament is set to kick-off in Buenos Aires, Argentina on June 11.
