IGNITE, Humber Polytechnic’s student union is presenting a concert with the hip-hop rap star Young M.A. together with performers ASTN, Lil Mabu and DJ Lynz. The event is set to start at 7 p.m. this Thursday, October 10, 2024, at the Universal Event Space, 6250 Highway 7 Vaughan, Ontario.
One of Young M.A’s most well-known songs, “Ooouuu,” which became a hit in 2016, cemented her place in the rap scene and launched her into popularity. She has been undergoing a series of health problems and returned to the stage early this year after a two-year hiatus.
“Young M.A., first of all, is not a typical rapper. She represents multiple identities and parts of society. She is a person of colour, second of all, she’s part of the LGBTQ+ community showing a cultural shift where institutions like Humber are embracing more diverse voices,” says Selena Ferreira, a second-year student in the bachelor of social science – criminal justice student at Humber Lakeshore campus.
IGNITE PR Communications representative, Emmaline Scharbach, says it is important to align events with student interests.
“Students have told us hip-hop is their preferred genre, and were proud to offer a lineup that resonates with them. Events like this aren’t just about the music, they enrich campus culture and help build connections between students,” Scharback says.
Tickets for the concert are available on IGNITE’s website, priced at $15 for Humber students and $25 for non-student guests. The event includes a pre-show party with interactive games.
