Career Engagement and education specialist Marijana Bosnjak says the main aspect of employment counselling is having a holistic approach.
“Employment or career advising doesn’t come as a single segment. It affects all segments of our lives, so it is really about understanding where people are in their lives, meeting them at where they are, and providing them with the resources and tools that can help them reach the goals they set for themselves,” she says.
Humber College’s Career Month is an initiative by the Academic & Career Success Centres in Lakeshore and North campus, happening in March and November every year. Their second annual Career Month launched on Oct. 29 and will run until Nov. 30.
Career Month is packed with in-person and online activities including career walk-in clinics for resume and cover letter reviews, free LinkedIn professional headshots, mock interview sessions, and workshops on optimizing job searches.
Upcoming events include a virtual Clifton Strengths Workshop on Nov. 13 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. consisting of a series of assessments to identify how student’s natural talents and patterns of thinking can align in their job pursuits.
Bosnjak held the position of employment advisor in Humber from 2014 until this past April, when she got promoted to career engagement and education specialist.
Bosnjak says she invites students who feel discouraged in their job searches, to attend their event programming.
“Applying, and not getting back responses from employers can be discouraging, it can be demotivating, and make us question whether we have the right set of skills and qualifications. Career Month is meant to help students build more confidence, identify what the roadblocks they are facing are, so we can provide guidance on how to overcome them,” she says.
Hefziba Mancilla Plaza is a four-year student in the bachelor of public relations program, and a marketing and promotions Assistant at Humber College.
She works in The Academic & Career Success Centre and Placement Services departments creating content and assisting them through their various events.
Plaza previously worked as Humber’s digital content assistant until this past April, when similarly to Bosnjak, she moved toward her current position.
Plaza says it is important for students to access these resources.
“Specifically talking about my journey here, thanks to Humber’s Career Connect, I was able to first step into a digital content creation role, which I liked, and allowed me to get the job that I currently have. So I think Humber creating these resources for students is definitely a very important step and a must-have,” she says.
Plaza was just hired as social media strategist for the NEXT Student Agency, an agency developed to promote client partnerships and student work in the Public Relations Faculty and the industry.
She says students should take advantage of the available events happening during career month and all year long.
“There’s a lot of mentors and we always have networking sessions, so you never know who you might meet, which can lead you to a path you may not even know you would have liked. Don’t give up, always apply early and have your resume ready to go,” she says.
