Premier Kathleen Wynne has promised a “commitment to care” that was detailed in today’s throne speech.
The speech, delivered by Lt. Gov. Elizabeth Dowdeswell, covered three essential topics while mentioning other issues the Wynne government feels Ontarians will be concerned about as they head to the polls June 7.
The speech focused on: healthcare, homecare and childcare.
The government plans to broaden the range of OHIP Plus, which currently gives prescription medication to those 25 and younger for free.
The speech also promised to expand the already announced boost of 5000 beds for hospitals, to cut hospital wait times in half.
The government’s outline for homecare promises to take care of seniors, with suggestions there will be significant investments in the elder care.
The Liberal commitment calls for more support for personal support workers (PSWs), and support for the families who take care of their elderly parents.
The throne speech also emphasized a commitment to affordable childcare.
The speech said that “the cost of child care, which has long been a stumbling block for growing families, will also be addressed in the budget.”
Finance minister Charles Sousa will detail the provincial budget next Wednesday, March 28 when details for the promises outlined in today’s throne speech are expected, including the financial expenditures that come with the “commitment to care.”
