Washington, D.C. remains on high alert after a shooting in the U.S. capital’s largest naval yard Monday.
The Guardian reports that shots were fired inside building 197 of the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters. Police were seen entering the building at 9:10 a.m. and at 9:37am the US Navy confirmed via twitter that there was an “active shooter at (the) Washington Navy Yard.”
Washington D.C. Chief of Police Cathy Lanier held a press conference at noon saying, “a call came in for a shooting on the Navy Yard, it came in shortly after 8:15. There was a request for Metropolitan Police Department assistance.”
Lanier says police were on the scene within seven minutes of receiving the call.
Lanier also confirmed that one of the shooters involved was killed in an engagement with police and at least one police officer was shot. Reports regarding the number of suspects involved in the shooting and the amount of casualties are vague. News organizations have reported different numbers of casualties via twitter as the situation has developed.
Lanier described the situation in her press conference as an “ongoing investigation.” During the press conference, Lanier says the police believed that there were, “multiple victims inside that are deceased.” Lanier also said that there may be two additional shooters at large in the Washington, D.C. area. She describes them as a white male and a black male wearing military-style uniforms.
Lanier also confirmed that the FBI, Department Of Defense investigators, and NCIS as well as state and military police are working on the case now. She describes the investigation as a unified investigation.
U.S. President Barack Obama addressed the shooting at 12:30 p.m. during a media availability. He was scheduled to speak about the financial crisis but the appearance was delayed so Obama’s team could brief him on the incident. During the press conference he vowed to hold those accountable for, as he described it, “a cowardly act.”
Scott Gordon of NBC Dallas Fort-Worth says that the shooter is identified as 34-year-old civilian military contractor Aaron Alexis of the Dallas Fort-Worth area. He says that Alexis had only recently started working at the Navy Yard.
As of 2:30 pm, Washington Mayor Vincent Gray says 12 people were killed in the Navy Yard shooting. Mark Berman of the Washington Post says that Alexis is included in the reports of the 12 people killed on the base Monday.
