A massive cyclone tore through the outer islands of Vanuatu killing at least eight people.

The cyclone winds were more than 300 kilometres per hour. It destroyed homes, smashed boats and washed away roads and bridges as it struck on late Friday through to Saturday.

Eight people have been killed and 20 injured as reports began to trickle from the hardest parts hit.

Reports from aid groups said that the main town on the island of Erromango, north of Tanna has suffered similar destruction.

A clean-up is underway in Port Vila.
