(The Independent) – Ghostbusters is getting a sequel, set in the same universe as the originals, and overseen by the original director’s son.

Slated for a 2020 release, the film is directed by Jason Reitman, son of Ivan Reitman. However, it’s unknown whether any of the original cast are set to reprise their roles in the present day sequel.

“I’ve always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan, when I was a 6-year-old visiting the set [of the 1984 film]“, Reitman said. ”I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans”.

Reitman has made it very clear the movie will not be a reboot. He has co-written the script alongside Monster House director Gil Kenan.

Paul Feig directed the all-female Ghostbusters reboot in 2016, which was not connected to the original film universe. Reitman says the new film “will follow the trajectory” of his father’s productions, but said he had “so much respect” for Feig’s work with actresses Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig as well.

Reitman’s credits include the new Hugh Jackman movie The Front Runner, Up in the Air, and Tully.

The new Ghostbusters will release in the Summer of 2020.
