Thirty-one people have been arrested in connection with a human trafficking ring in the GTA and Quebec.

York Regional Police in a press conference today detailed how more than 300 charges were laid last Thursday, Oct. 10 following almost a year-long investigation. Police say the trafficking ring was run in part by an organized crime syndicate with ties to fraud, drug trafficking, and weapons offences.

The investigation began after two victims escaped the trafficking ring and tipped police to one of the suspected pimps.

Officers identified more than 30 women and 12 victims, the majority of whom were moved from Quebec to other parts of Canada.

Police say further victims may be too afraid to come forward, but York Chief Eric Jolliffe says police will “continue to offer assistance and support to the victims of violent human trafficking.”
