Toronto’s first snow is a good reminder of the holiday season to come and this movie release Last Christmas adds to that seasonal mood.
The main characters of Paul Faig’s Last Christmas are played by British actors Emilia Clarke, who went from conquering seven kingdoms on HBO’s Game of Thrones to romantic comedies, and Crazy Rich Asians’ prince charming Henry Golding.
The film saw its theatrical release in Canada on Nov. 8. It’s no coincidence that the movie is called Last Christmas, the same as the legendary holiday anthem by George Michael, as the movie features previously unreleased songs by the artist, who passed away in late 2016.
Among the topics that create the holiday atmosphere throughout the film are heartwarming connection between Kate (Clarke) and Tom (Golding), friendship and love, mistakes and recoveries and Christmas miracles.
The film has grossed over $14 million worldwide over the first weekend. But the film also raked in mixed reviews and comments.
Moviegoers to the Cineplex Queensway on Thursday night had mixed feelings about the holiday romance. Donna Will, 21, liked the feel-good aspect.
“I really enjoyed the movie,” says Will. “Especially because it had this typical Christmas magic element to it. I feel like it’s one of those holiday movies that you should watch with your friends to get in the mood of the season.”
But Jai Singh, 20, was not as impressed.
“I want to say I expected more,” Singh says. “There were many clichés that contributed to making Last Christmas a typical romantic comedy, but I guess that’s the genre’s general fault. Other than that, it is a nice story and there were beautiful shots of London with the snow and lights. It could be a little more unpredictable, but I don’t regret watching it”.
Last Christmas is available in theatres across the country. Here’s the trailer.
