Austria (Reuters)- 2021 F1 World Champion Max Verstappen’s first taste of live racing in 2022 was not his usual experience as the Dutch driver took to the ice in an Alpine racetrack in the Austrian mountains.

Verstappen, displaying the number 1 on his livery for the first time since winning the World Championship, was racing against Austrian ice speedway star Franky Zorn.

Although he’d never driven an F1 car on ice before, the Red Bull Racing driver enjoyed the experience on the circuit at Zell am See airport situated between Kitzsteinhorn Glacier and Grossglockner Mountain in Austria.

He used specially designed Pirelli spiked tires for added grip as he explored the ice track in the spectacular Alpine location.

Verstappen’s defense of his F1 world title begins in Bahrain in March with pre-season testing in Barcelona taking place at the end of February.
