Canada recorded its warmest winter in 2024. One of the coldest countries in the world saw a lack of snowfall this winter in areas of southern provinces such as Ontario and Quebec. Professor in the Department of Biology at McGill University, Catherine Potvin, says the climate modelling reports that were released six years ago by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have predicted everything that we have seen in terms of climate change. Potvin, who is also Canada Research Chair in Climate Change Mitigation and Tropical Forest, says the warm winter in 2024 seems to be in support of the climate modelling; these predictions show more extreme events in future, such as more forest fires and droughts.
