“Plans are still to be determined, but we believe there will be three floors. [There will be] a weight room, a cardio area, [and] a fitness area,” says Micheal Kopinak, Manager of Student Services at Humber College. “We’re thinking 2015, but 2016 is more realistic.”

Kopinak said it is a priority to ensure students have a proper facility for fitness.

“There are no questions that the lakeshore campus and top notch faculty need to ensure there is an adequate space,” said Kopinak. “[Students] need a place to work out, play, and have some fun in.”

The expansion, currently in its very early stages, will be housed at the old Harvey Davidson building across from the student

Tanya Perdikoulias, Assistant to the Vice President of Finance and Administrative Services at Humber College, confirmed that plans for the expansion are being drawn up. The expansion will cost roughly $10 million dollars, which will be funded by the building levy portion of the ancillary fees that each student pays.

Humber Lakeshore has close to 8,000 students enrolled. The fitness class studio can hold 19 to 30 people depending on the class at one time.

The need for a larger facility is most visible at this time of year. Nathania Bron, Humber Lakeshore’s Recreation and Fitness Coordinator, said she is hoping for an expansion in the next two years.

“Every year we always expect a ton more people in classes, it’s always much busier in January. January, it’s one of those things, people want a new start. January, new you,” said Bron. “The numbers usually stay up for about three weeks and then they dwindle a little bit, but hopefully we can get them hooked.”
