18-year-old singer Billie Eilish kicked off her world tour in Miami on Monday with a speech about body-shaming. The artist is known for her excessively baggy clothing which she has said is used to avoid the sexualization of her body.
Before performing the song All The Good Girls Go To Hell, Eilish played a two minute pre-recorded video of her taking off layers of clothing to reveal her wearing a tank top. As she reveals more of her body than normal, the video shows her sinking into a pool of black tar while audio of her speaking played in the background.
The audio included her saying:
“If what I wear is comfortable, I am not a woman,” she said. “If I shed the layers, I am a slut”.
“Though you’ve never seen my body, you still judge me for it. Why?” she asked.
At the end of the clip, she warned against making “assumptions about people based on their size”.
“We decide who they are. We decide what they’re worth,” she said. “If I wear more, if I wear less, who decides what that makes me?
“Is my value based only on your perception? Or is your opinion of me not my responsibility?”
Fans are taking to twitter to show their appreciation for the artist and her out-spoken opinions on body positivity.
