James Toland from Scotland has reached the highest possible division in FIFA 21 Ultimate Team by using the controller with his feet.

Toland was born with Thrombocytopenia-absent radius (TAR) syndrome, a rare disorder that is present at birth. It is a disorder characterized by low levels of platelets in the blood, and absence of the long, thin bones of the forearms. This caused Toland to play FIFA on the Playstation 5, and use the controller with his feet, from which he reached the elite division on Ultimate Team, which is a game mode within FIFA 21.

“I was born with shorter arms, but really no arms,” says Toland. “I got FIFA 95, and that was on the PC, and I wasn’t really good at the start, I wasn’t good at all because it was very difficult. I couldn’t do it with my hands so I just kept practising and practising [with my feet].”

Toland tweeted his excitement upon reaching the elite division, saying, “We got ELITE with the feet!!!!!!! 5 star weak foot!!!!!! Lets go!!!!!!!!!,” which was followed by a few emojis consisting of a controller emoji in the middle of two feet emojis, and attached was a screenshot of the image of him streaming on Twitch and him reaching the Elite division.

He explains how he uses a bed to make the process easier for him, also taking inspiration from Pro Evolution Soccer’s (PES) control settings, bringing them over to use in FIFA.

“I’ve changed my buttons to PES,” says Toland. “To run, I use R1 instead of R2, I changed the jockey to R2, and I use L2 for the finesse shots.” “What I’ll do is I’ll use a bed, and the reason I use a bed is I use the duvets on the bed, and what it does is that it doesn’t make it even on the flat surface, therefore if you move the controller a wee bit to the right, the right target goes down, and vice-versa.”

Toland then broke down the different uses of the toes on his feet, and how he used them to his advantage on the PS5 controller.

“I use the left for the left side of the controller, and the right foot for the right side of the controller,” says Toland. “I use the toe beside my big toe [on my right foot] for R1, I use my big toe for X, square, triangle, and circle. I use my left big toe for the analog stick, and I use my right big toe for the analog stick as well.
